September Awareness: Suicide Prevention & CPTSD
September invites us into a month of compassion, vigilance, and healing. As we honor Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness Month, Restoring the Remnant remains committed to strengthening communities with trauma informed understanding, spiritual grounding, and practical support. Many individuals carry wounds that are not visible. Some are recent. Some are layered across years of adversity. Awareness opens the door. Healing is the journey we walk together.
Suicide is often the result of overwhelming pain that feels impossible to escape. It is not about weakness. It is about distress that has become unbearable. People may show signs through deep sadness, emotional numbness, withdrawal from relationships, increased substance use, or statements that express hopelessness or feeling like a burden. Some individuals show sudden calmness after intense distress, which can be a sign that they have made a dangerous decision. When we notice these changes, the most important response is presence. Not panic. Presence communicates safety.
CPTSD develops from prolonged or repeated trauma. Childhood adversity, domestic violence, spiritual abuse, community violence, and chronic instability can shape the nervous system in ways that affect identity, relationships, and emotional regulation. People may experience emotional flashbacks, difficulty trusting others, persistent negative beliefs about themselves, chronic anxiety, dissociation, or cycles of exhaustion and shutdown. CPTSD is not a flaw. It is a survival response that can be healed with time, support, and safe community in Christ Jesus.
Throughout Scripture, we see honest accounts of people who reached the limits of their emotional and spiritual endurance. Elijah became so overwhelmed that he asked God to take his life after a season of relentless fear, exhaustion, and isolation. Jonah pleaded for death when despair clouded his sense of purpose. Job expressed deep anguish and wished for relief from unbearable suffering. Even King Saul died by suicide after prolonged torment and hopelessness. These stories remind us that emotional pain is not new and that God has always met His people in moments of despair, offering presence, restoration, and renewed strength. They show that trauma, despair, and the longing for relief have biblical precedent, and that healing is possible through compassion, community, and divine care.
Support begins with listening without trying to fix. People in distress need space to speak without being rushed toward solutions. Simple statements such as “I am here with you” or “You are not alone” create grounding. Validation reduces shame and increases safety. Encouraging professional support is important, but it must be done gently. Therapists, counselors, trauma informed facilitators, and faith rooted healers provide structured care. Staying connected is also essential. Regular check ins, practical help, prayer, and presence can interrupt isolation. When someone expresses intent to harm themselves, stay with them and seek immediate help.
Healing is strengthened through grounding practices such as deep breathing, sensory awareness, gentle stretching, and naming what is present in the moment. Faith rooted practices such as scripture meditation, breath prayers, worship, and community fellowship offer spiritual anchoring. Daily wellness supports like consistent sleep, hydration, movement, journaling, and creative expression build resilience over time. Community based prevention through peer support groups, trauma healing circles, emotional literacy workshops, and awareness events helps reduce stigma and strengthens protective factors.
This month, Restoring the Remnant is offering two opportunities for education, healing, and prevention. These gatherings are designed to strengthen individuals, families, and communities with trauma informed tools and spiritual grounding.
